Elite Company is committed to providing a safe, positive, and supportive environment for all participants, staff, coaches, volunteers, parents, and visitors. Health and safety are central to everything we do - from training sessions and events to clothing operations and content creation.

We believe a safe environment allows people to perform, grow, and be elite.

Scope

This policy applies to all Elite Company activities, including but not limited to:

  • Basketball training sessions and programmes

  • Events, games, and activations

  • Use of facilities and equipment

  • Staff, contractors, volunteers, players, parents, and spectators

Responsibilities

Elite Company

Elite Company will:

  • Take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved

  • Provide safe facilities, equipment, and training environments

  • Identify and manage hazards and risks

  • Ensure coaches and staff are informed of emergency procedures

  • Maintain appropriate supervision ratios

  • Comply with all relevant New Zealand health and safety legislation

Coaches, Staff & Volunteers

Coaches, staff, and volunteers are expected to:

  • Take reasonable care of their own health and safety

  • Act in a way that does not put others at risk

  • Follow all Elite Company policies and procedures

  • Report hazards, injuries, incidents, or near-misses immediately

  • Ensure sessions are appropriate for the age and ability of participants

  • Promote positive behaviour and safe participation at all times

Players & Participants

Players are expected to:

  • Follow coach instructions and safety guidelines

  • Use equipment correctly and respectfully

  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for training

  • Inform a coach of any injury, illness, or discomfort

  • Treat others with respect to maintain a safe environment

Parents & Caregivers

Parents and caregivers are expected to:

  • Ensure children arrive fit, healthy, and ready to participate

  • Inform Elite Company of any medical conditions or injuries

  • Support and reinforce safe behaviour

  • Supervise children before and after sessions unless otherwise arranged

Mouthguard Policy (Basketball Safety Requirement)

  • Elite Company strongly recommends the use of mouthguards for all basketball participants

  • Where applicable, mouthguards are required in line with Basketball New Zealand guidelines

  • Participants who do not have a mouthguard may be restricted from contact activities at the coach’s discretion

  • Responsibility for providing and wearing a mouthguard sits with the participant and their parent/caregiver

Elite Company will support safe participation but cannot accept responsibility for injuries resulting from failure to wear protective equipment.

Injuries & Incidents

  • All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported to a coach or Elite Company representative

  • Serious injuries will be managed immediately, with emergency services contacted if required

  • Parents or caregivers will be notified as soon as practicable

  • Incident records will be maintained to help improve safety practices

Emergency Procedures

Elite Company will:

  • Have emergency procedures in place for all sessions and events

  • Ensure coaches know evacuation routes and emergency contacts

  • Carry basic first-aid supplies where appropriate

In an emergency, the safety of participants is the priority.

Medical Conditions

Parents and participants must disclose:

  • Relevant medical conditions (e.g. asthma, allergies, previous injuries)

  • Any changes to medical information

This information will be treated respectfully and used only to ensure participant safety.

Hazard Management

Elite Company will regularly assess:

  • Playing surfaces and facilities

  • Equipment condition

  • Environmental factors (weather, lighting, heat, etc.)

Any identified hazards will be addressed, controlled, or removed where possible.

Policy Review

This Health & Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as needed to reflect best practice and legislative requirements.
